Paul J. Fitzgerald is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Licensed Clinical Psychologist. He first became acquainted with the Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler in the 1970’s, while working as a mental health worker at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago, with Bina Rosenberg, M.D., Bernard Shulman, M.D., and other members of Rudolf Dreikurs’ clinical practice. Paul’s first Adlerian teaching responsibility was orienting nursing students who would be working on the mental health unit, where the treatment model incorporated an Adlerian therapeutic milieu. At St. Joseph’s, Paul learned to interview patients for Life Style Assessments using Rudolf Dreikurs’ format.
Paul earned his Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Alfred Adler Institute (Now the Adler School of Professional Psychology) in 1986. He earned his Doctor of Psychology degree from Adler School of Professional Psychology in 1997, and currently serves as a core faculty member (teaching Adlerian courses and other course areas) and is Director of Master’s Counseling Training in the Adler University Department of Counselor Education and Counseling.
He has served as a clinical director in the Employee Assistance field and currently serves as a board member of the Northern Illinois Employee Assistance Professionals Association. His clinical practice includes working with individuals, couples, and families. His specialties include addictions, grief/loss, anxiety, depression, conflict resolution, marriage and family problems, and work/life issues. He has created and presented numerous workplace training sessions including stress management, dealing with change, and preparing for retirement.
Paul is married with three adult children. He enjoys sailing, kayaking, hiking, and bicycling, and plays the guitar, banjo, and fiddle.
